Album Review: A Sound of Thunder - The Krimson Kult

Holy cow! I know I haven't posted in a hot minute but sometimes I hear something and it compels me to start writing. I cannot tell you how much I've wanted to hear this album. Ever since it was announced I have had a mighty need for it. Now it's out on their Bandcamp, I immediately purchased it and put the full thing on. Yeah man, this one was worth the money, I wasn't waiting for this record to hit streaming platforms. A Sound of Thunder just lit a fire in me that I don't think many bands can touch. Their new album The Krimson Kult is such a stellar effort from all involved. Inspired by real events this album takes you on a journey. With commanding vocals, well-performed musicianship and tight production, The Kirmson Kult keeps you hooked from start to finish.

Opening on the atmospheric "Orb Weaver" had me hooked from the opening notes but nothing could prepare me for the album we were going to get. The second track "The Rise of the Krimson Kult" really puts you in the right mind for where this album goes. A modern take on classic rock and metal that has all of the charms of 70's metal with the well-defined beauty of modern metal production. You feel the guitars, the bass, the drums and the lead vocalist, Nina Osegueda's voice. Yeah, to say the least, I was incredibly mesmerised by it. Even though I've been listening to this band for years (since the Tales From The Deadside album) it just amazes me every time how much this band can get me sucked into a record.

I would say the stand out tracks of this record for me would have to be "Grave Troopers" which had a familiar time signature, riff formula and guitar tone to the early bands of heavy metal. I would also have to favour "The Wizard of Crow County" which gave me Dio-era Rainbow vibes, which is already a point in my book. Also, it's the track that I want to come back to the most. With its dark semi-acoustic opening and powerful chorus. It's a good old fashioned story-telling tune, with great descriptive language that paints a picture in your head. Then that chorus hits and suddenly it's a massive karaoke ballad. Genuinely so enjoyable.

I have to applaud A Sound of Thunder for this one. After only a few listens it's already one of my favourite albums of 2022. Their respect for the genre is only matched by their talent for performing it. Sincerely I hope you check this one out!
