Single Review: Impavidus - Justice

Impavidus are back with a new single and as soon as I heard, I was immediately interested. It’s been a long, long year without gigs. However, getting new music is always appreciated. This new song, Justice was recorded in 2019 at the same time as their tune Artifice. So they’ve had this song locked and loaded for a minute. It was recorded at Foel Studios and it sounds great. It’s a fact-paced, power-packed blast to the senses with a strong riff and a solid hook.

The meaty, crushing metal tune grabs your attention straight away. The production is filled to the brim with harsh metal tones. The bass and drum work tightly together setting a fierce and brutal pace. The bass is deep and keeps the pace going allowing the guitar to go wild, especially in the solo, which elevates the track and gives it that little bit of extra power. Everything musically sounds excellent, every piece of instrumentation packs that punch and sonically it makes you want to get up and headbang away. Then you get to the vocals which are delivered in such a forceful way and just sit on top of the production. The heavy guttural vocal style matches the pure intensity of the track, then every so often comes you get these well-integrated clean vocals. They add this nice angel vs devil back and forth in the chorus and it sounds really nice how the rough vocal work bounces off of the clean. The clean vocals almost sound like an echo to the heavy intensity.

Lyrically, there’s lots of there’s imagery judgment and argumentative language is used as one side is escaping and the other cries for justice to be served. Lines like “I am human, you are death. I am human, you have regressed” speaks to how the conflict is portrayed to the audience. The conflict is erupting and coming to a head. Which vocal veracity matches the overdriven and harsh metal music.

Overall, I really liked this song. I always love hearing new music from these guys and hopefully, 2021 brings more good things from this band. If I’m able to I want to go see them live again. However, for now, it’s nice to get new music.
