EP Review: Waiting For Wednesday - Routes

You know what? I love doing this, I love discovering new music and bringing it to peoples attention. When you find music so grounded, music that is so passionate, I feel like it's something that I have to talk about. Waiting for Wednesday are a country duo from Bradford, UK consisting of singer-songwriters Laura Shackleton and Anna Watkins. I have taken a bit of time now to listen to them and I have to say, I like what I'm hearing so far. Their music is so emotionally charged and really well put together. Their new EP, Routes, is a fabulous example of making something that is so simple sound so much larger than life.

Their lyrics are poignant and their music is passionately played. The duo truly take you through a soulful journey on this EP. Their earnest and warm vocals really meld well together, creating beautiful and endearing harmonies. The melodies are weaved together in such a way that I instantly loved it. Just these beautiful songs with so much passion thrown in. The lyrics are well-written like poetry, each line flowing in to the next. It all just comes together so nicely. So from a song-writing perspective this is a pretty damn decent EP. The pair are able to project so much emotion and they play with some great musical ideas here. I have to say, colour me impressed.

The only real problem I have with it is the production. Yeah, I know a little harsh considering that it's not the worst production. However, it's not as polished as I would like. You can certainly here the dip in quality here and there. There's a shaky sound here and there (and that's coming through my high quality headphones). In saying that though, it's not even something I hold against the EP as it's still very well done, it just can be a little distracting at times. To be honest it's just something I noticed and wanted to mention.

All in all, I was very impressed with Waiting for Wednesday. I was automatically hooked on their fantastic harmonies and their beautiful song-writing. Their voices complement each other and makes for dynamic, interesting melodies. I would definitely recommend giving them a listen. Routes is an earthy and grounded EP. Perfect for a chilling out and letting your mind wonder.
